The Indigenous HIV/AIDS Syndemic Strategy

Weaving Together the National HIV, STI, and Viral Hepatitis Plans

One of Indigenous peoples’ strengths is our ability to understand our interdependence – with each other, the land, generations past, and those to come. This type of “big thinking” naturally lends itself to recognizing that the complex issues we face often require solutions that are equally as nuanced.

To support the development of comprehensive solutions to end the HIV epidemic in Indian Country, the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board, alongside the Indian Health Service National HIV Program, and other partners, created The Indigenous HIV/AIDS Syndemic Strategy: Weaving Together the National HIV, STI, and Viral Hepatitis Plans. This document contains emerging practices, existing initiatives, as well as traditional Indigenous knowledge that can be used by Tribal decision-makers to develop community-tailored interventions that address the syndemics of HIV, STIs, and viral hepatitis.
