In this presentation, LCDR Samantha Gustafson and LCDR Sherry Daker discuss the process of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) and the application of documentation best practices to improve GPRA screening rates, and describe the use of naloxone as a harm reduction strategy.

LCDR Samantha Gustafson, PharmD, received her pharmacy degree from North Dakota State University in 2008. She began a career in retail pharmacy, and transitioned to a clinical position in 2014 with the Indian Health Service on the Red Lake Indian Reservation in Red Lake, MN. She currently serves as the Red Lake Harm Reduction Services Lead, where she is responsible for the naloxone co-prescribing initiative, and has coordinated the deployment of naloxone for the first responders and community members of the Red Lake Nation. She has also contributed to several national opioid projects and committees. She is passionate about providing community education on harm reduction strategies and available treatment resources.

LCDR Sherry Daker currently serves as a clinical pharmacist at Red Lake Hospital, with her area of interest being Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in support of recovery for opioid use disorder. She earned her PharmD from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, FL in 2017. After graduation, she joined the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) and completed a PGY-1 ambulatory care pharmacy residency at Red Lake Indian Health Service Unit. She is a Detention Center Pharmacy Specialist as well as member of the Red Lake Tribal Healing to Wellness Court.
