In this series of presentations we hear from Dr. Jessica Gregg, MD, PhD, as she provides a comprehensive overview of Substance Use Disorders, including Medications for Opioid Use Disorder, and shares strategies to reduce stigma. Next, Dr. Samantha Gustafson, PharmD, discusses the goals of harm reduction, the application of harm reduction principles in healthcare settings, and promising practices for the deployment of harm reduction strategies in primary care.

Dr. Jessica Gregg, MD, PhD; Dr. Samantha Gustafson, PharmD

Dr. Jessica Gregg MD, PhD, received her undergraduate degree at Stanford University, her medical degree at the University of New Mexico, and a PhD in Medical Anthropology at Emory University. She began her medical career in primary care at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), where she co-founded the OHSU Department of Medicine’s Social Medicine curriculum in partnership with City Central Concern, a non-profit caring for individuals struggling with lack of housing and substance use disorders. She subsequently became the medical director for Central City Concern’s Hooper Detoxification and Stabilization Center, and eventually assumed the role of Senior Medical Director for Substance Use Disorder Services for the agency. She subsequently developed the HRBR clinic at OHSU, a low-threshold buprenorphine clinic, and in 2021, she became Chief Medical Officer for Fora Health in Portland, Oregon.

Dr. Samantha Gustafson, PharmD, received her pharmacy degree from North Dakota State University in 2008. She began a career in retail pharmacy, and transitioned to a clinical position in 2014 with the Indian Health Service on the Red Lake Indian Reservation in Red Lake, MN. She currently serves as the Red Lake Harm Reduction Services Lead, where she is responsible for the naloxone co-prescribing initiative, and has coordinated the deployment of naloxone for the first responders and community members of the Red Lake Nation. She has also contributed to several national opioid projects and committees. She is passionate about providing community education on harm reduction strategies and available treatment resources.
