In this presentation, Dr. Jonathan Robbins, MD and Dr. Katharine Marshall, MD, describe universal precautions for prescribing opioids in primary care, discuss opioid failure in the context of use for chronic pain and provide strategies for patient-centered options for discontinuation of chronic full-agonist opioids.

Dr. Jonathan Robbins, MD, MS | Dr. Katharine Marshall, MD

Dr. Jonathan Leserman Robbins, MD, MS, is a general internist and primary care doctor at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR. He splits his time between outpatient primary care, the inpatient addiction consult service, and a pain and addiction consult clinic. He is an active educator and participates in several ECHOs on pain and addiction.

Dr. Kate Marshall, M.D. is the current Samuel H. Wise fellow in general internal medicine at Oregon Health & Science University. She obtained her doctorate at OHSU and completed residency and a chief residency in internal medicine at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Oregon, followed by fellowship training in addiction medicine at OHSU. She is board certified in both internal medicine and addiction medicine. Her particular interests in medicine include systems improvement, provider education, and exploring the historic context of American drug policy and addictions care.
