Presentation Title: Decolonizing Gender Identity and Sexuality
In this presentation, Joseph M. Pierce, an Associate Professor at Stonybrook University whose research specializes on gender and sexuality in Latin American and Indigenous cultures, discusses the complex and sometimes problematic ways we talk about gender and sexuality, what “decolonizing” means, and the importance of allowing Indigenous people to speak to their own experiences.
Joseph M. Piece is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and Associate Professor at Stonybrook University. His research focuses on the intersections of kinship, gender, sexuality, and race in Latin America, 19th century literature and culture, queer studies, Indigenous studies, and hemispheric approaches to citizenship and belonging.
