In this presentation, Dr. Alan G. Waxman, MD, MPH, Emeritus Professor at the University of New Mexico Dept. of Obstetrics & Gynecology reviews the 2026 updated recommendations for cervical cancer screening, and discusses the three FDA approved commercial tests for primary HPV screenings as well as the follow-up modalities for a positive test. Finally, Dr. Waxman reviews the technique, efficacy and potential benefits of HPV self-collection.

Dr. Alan Waxman is Emeritus Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of New Mexico. He had an active general obstetrics and gynecology practice in New Mexico for 42 years. Over the past 25 years, his primary clinical and academic focus has been cervical cancer prevention.
While with the Indian Health Service Dr. Waxman was based in Gallup, New Mexico and Anchorage, Alaska. In addition to providing ob/gyn care for Native women, from 1994-2000, he served as IHS Chief Clinical Consultant for Ob/Gyn.
Dr. Waxman has worked with various professional organizations including ASCCP, ACOG, the Indian Health Service and the International Gynecologic Cancer Society with a focus on developing colposcopy training programs and cervical screening and management guidelines. He is a former chair of ACOG’s Committee on Healthcare for Underserved Women and co-chair of ASCCP’s Committee on International Education and Humanitarian Outreach. He served on numerous other ASCCP committees including the Society’s Board of Directors and was ASCCP’s President 2012-2013. He has authored numerous articles and book chapters on subjects related to human papillomavirus, colposcopy and cervical cancer prevention. While he has been retired from clinical practice since 2020, he continues to teach residents and medical students and lectures nationally and internationally on cervical cancer prevention and related topics.
