In this presentation, Dr. Darren Braude discusses essential airway management techniques for EMS providers, emphasizing that “basic” airway management is both critical and complex. He reviews patient positioning strategies to optimize airway access and ventilation. The session focuses on mastering bag-mask ventilation (BMV) through maintaining an open airway, achieving a tight mask seal, delivering proper ventilation volumes, and continuous monitoring with capnography and PEEP. Dr. Braude also covers managing challenges while maintaining airway, and introduces extraglottic airway devices (EGDs) for effective airway control and gastric decompression, highlighting their similarity in management to endotracheal tubes.
