In this series of presentations, Dr. Thomas Becker, Medical Epidemiologist and ECHO faculty member, discusses non-Covid pandemics, how they changed societal and individuals’ behavior and what happened in their disease histories to alter their course/s. Then Dr. Jorge Mera, ECHO Medical Director and Director of Infectious Diseases for Cherokee Nation Health Services, discusses the latest COVID-19 clinical updates, variants, management, treatments and vaccine updates.

Dr. Tom Becker | Dr. Jorge Mera

Dr. Thomas Becker, MD, PhD, is a medical epidemiologist, and trained in internal medicine, anthropology, and public health; he began his career at the University of New Mexico before moving to the Northwest about 20 years ago. Since his arrival in Portland, Becker has worked with the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board and Oregon Health & Science University. He has published on a diverse range of American Indian health issues, including both infectious and chronic diseases. And with the Indian Health Board, he has been involved in etiologic studies, community prevention programs and education programs to improve career opportunities for people in tribes nationwide.

Dr. Jorge Mera, MD, is the Director of Infectious Diseases for Cherokee Nation Health Services (CNHS), the largest tribally operated health care system in the United States. He completed his fellowship in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in Infectious Diseases. During recent years Jorge’s efforts have been dedicated to organizing the Cherokee Nation HCV elimination program, as well as the HIV/HCV ECHO project. He is also the Director of the HIV clinic since 2012 and the Principal Investigator of the End the HIV Epidemic for the CNHS. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine of the Oklahoma State University Health Science Center and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
