As cognitive decline progresses, the risks associated with firearm access—including accidental injury, suicide, and harm to others—become increasingly significant. This session provides practical guidance for healthcare providers, caregivers, and families on how to address these risks compassionately and effectively. Dr. Brown reviews, the unique dangers firearms can pose for people with dementia, how cognitive and behavioral changes can increase safety risks, strategies for discussing firearm safety with patients and caregivers, secure storage options and legal considerations for transferring firearms.
