In this presentation, Whitney Essex, MSN, FNP-BC, ECHO faculty member and Family Nurse Practitioner formerly with Infectious Diseases at Cherokee Nation Health Services, discusses HIV PrEP, the evidence on effectiveness, monitoring, and best practices. Then, Whitney shares the latest recommendations for Post-exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) and presents on the clinical care of HIV as well as recent advances in treatment making the management of HIV infection a staple of primary care services. Finally, Jonathan Enchinton, PharmD, BCPS, AAHIVP, shares how Phoenix Indian Medical Center provides PrEP, DoxyPEP and additional care and services at their facility.

Whitney Essex, MSN, FNP-BC, received her Master of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2011 and is board certified in family practice by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center. Whitney has been a Nurse Practitioner with Cherokee Nation Health Services since 2012 and works in the Infectious Diseases Department where she coordinates the Cherokee Nation Hepatitis C Elimination Program and co-directors the Ending the HIV Epidemic Program. Whitney assists in the maintenance of a general infectious diseases clinical service, providing primary care for HIV, HIV-PrEP, hepatitis C, and other infectious diseases related patients. She also serves as faculty for several infectious diseases-related virtual ECHO clinics across Indian Country.

Jonathan Enchinton, PharmD, BCPS, AAHIVP, is a board certified pharmacotherapy specialist and HIV certified clinical pharmacist in Phoenix, AZ. Jonathan is affiliated with the HIV Center of Excellence at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center (PIMC). He specializes in HIV, Hepatitis C, and sexually transmitted infections. He obtained his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Texas at Austin, followed by a one year post-graduate residency, and now has over 6 years of total clinical pharmacy experience in ambulatory care, inpatient, and emergency settings. He is an enthusiastic preceptor known for a strong passion in teaching, public speaking ability, and is especially valued for his clinical skills with a proven ability to drive positive outcomes for patients.
