In this series of presentations, Lisa Griggs, Tribal Community Health Provider Project (TCHP) Manager at the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB), provides an overview of the TCHP project. Then Kari Ann Kuntzelman, Licensed Dental Therapist and Dental Health Aide Education Specialist at NPAIHB, shares an overview of the Dental Health Aide assessment, results and the importance of the data to inform program development. Then, Katie Hunsberger, Behavioral Health Aide (BHA) Program Manager at NPAIHB provides an overview of the pre-operational phases and development of the BHA program, including awareness and consent, the importance of including a relational approach with Indigenous students in the design, and more. Carrie Sampson Samuels, CHAP Program Director, and Sasha Jones, CHAP Program Manager, then provide an overview of the Community Health Aide (CHA) project assessment and implementation. Finally, Stephanie Christian, TCHP Education Program Director, shares an exciting opportunity to become part of the Community Health Representative Education Program.

Lisa Griggs is a descendent of the Blackfeet Nation and the Tribal Community Health Provider Project (TCHP) Manager at the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Marylhurst University. She has been at the Board for 17 years. Starting with Project Red Talon (PRT) where they helped build capacity around STI/HIV testing. Also as the Program Ops Assistant working with legislative and policy staff for many years. For the past six years she was the Executive Coordinator at the Board. She is excited to continue her work here at the Board and expand my knowledge and skills to serve in a different capacity to our NW Tribes.

Kari Ann Kuntzelman (Chickasaw Nation), a Licensed Dental Therapist, shares her passion for oral health equity where she works as the Dental Health Aide Education Specialist at the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board – an organization that serves the health policy and public health needs of the forty-three federally recognized Tribes of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. As the ADTA President, Kari Ann aims to advance the practice of dental therapy as a means for ending oral health care disparities across the nation. Kari Ann is a proud member of the Chickasaw Nation and graduate of the Alaska Dental Therapy Education Program at Ilisagvik College.

Katie Hunsberger (Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation), started working at the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board in the Fall of 2020. As the BHA Student Support Coordinator, she connects with current and future Behavioral Health Aides and walks alongside them in their educational journey. As a student herself, Katie loves creating relationships with those she supports by working with them to encourage self-care, providing emotional support, and being a good relative. Katie works to recruit, build material, and assist the Tribal Community Health Provider Project in various ways. Her largest project is supporting the BHA Education Program.

Carrie Sampson-Samuels is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and has a BS in Health Studies and Community Health Education with a certificate in Healthcare Management. Carrie has worked in Public Health for the past 11 years, serving NW Tribes through various projects at the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board and as the Community Wellness Director at Yellowhawk Tribal Health Center. Carrie has also worked for the Blackfeet Nation and had the opportunity to serve Treaty 7 Tribes at the Alberta First Nations Information Governance Center in Calgary, AB, Canada.

Sasha Jones, is a citizen of the Shoshone Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation. Sasha has a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of Nevada Reno and is working to obtain her Master’s in Public Health from the University of Nevada Reno. Sasha has many years of experience serving tribal health organizations. Sasha is passionate about being of service to indigenous communities. Sasha has three children and a husband of 19 years. In her spare time, she enjoys long walks, being outside, gardening and foraging traditional foods and medicines, practicing traditional crafts, and attending ceremonies.

Stephannie Christian graduated from Stanford University in 2006 as a Physician Associate. She worked two years in Obstetrics and Gynecology in California, before moving to Alaska. She has worked with the Community Health Aide Program since 2009 with Tanana Chiefs Conference. She spent many years working in the field as a PA-C with the Health Aides and teaching at the Health Aide Training Center. She has sat on the Academic Review Committee and the Review and Approval Committee for Alaska’s Health Program.
