Inclusive Dermatology: A Case Review | September 16, 2022

In this presentation, Aimee Smidt shares opportunities to increase diversity, equity and inclusivity (DEI) in Dermatology as pertains to clinical care, education, and research, discusses how this applies in the Primary Care/Urgent Care/Emergency Services settings and finally provides practical knowledge about the diagnosis and treatment of common and/or worrisome skin findings in a range of skin types, including those most pertinent to Indigenous peoples.

Aimee Smidt, MD, FAAD, FAAP

Aimee Smidt, MD, FAAD, FAAP is originally from New England, and obtained her M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, NY. She completed Pediatrics residency at Baylor College of Medicine Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, followed by Dermatology residency at Northwestern University in Chicago and a fellowship in Pediatric Dermatology at Northwestern University-Children’s Memorial Hospital. A faculty member at UNM since 2009, she is the only board-certified and fellowship-trained pediatric dermatologist in the state. She assumed the role of Chair of the Department of Dermatology in 2017 and is most proud of the excellent team and tremendous Dermatology residency training program she has helped to build. She has also served as UNMH Chief of Staff (2014-6) and on the UNMH Board of Trustees (2016-8) and has been recognized as a “Top Doc” in Albuquerque. Her main clinical interests include: vascular birthmarks/anomalies, laser procedures, skin disease in adolescents and improving access to dermatologic care in New Mexico. She has a long track record of educational activities at all levels within the HSC and regionally/nationally, including teaching medical students, residents (Dermatology and Pediatrics) and she has served as a mentor and preceptor for many trainees and other providers. She is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the Society for Pediatric Dermatology and the International Society for Vascular Anomalies, among other organizations. Her personal interests include fitness, the outdoors, Southwestern art and jewelry, and spending time with her boys, dogs, friends, and colleagues.
