In this presentation, Dr. Wei Sum Li, MD, provides an extensive, provider-focused overview of the management of substance use disorders as a chronic disease in the primary care setting. Dr. Li discusses the clinical importance of accurate patient-centered language and how to diagnose and formulate a treatment plan for opioid use disorder using evidence-based and patient-centered approaches. Furthermore, Dr. Li reviews how to initiate buprenorphine in a primary care patient and describes the role of harm reduction and practical strategies to reduce harm in individuals who use substances.

Dr. Wei Sum Li, MD, is an Adult Medicine Primary Care Physician at the Charlestown Healthcare Center, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Dr. Li also serves as an Inpatient Consult for the MGH Addiction Consult Team and an Instructor in Medicine for the Harvard Medical School.
