In these slides, Dr. Karla Thornton, Professor of Infectious Diseases at the UNM Health Sciences Center, discusses the importance of using non-stigmatizing language when talking about substance use disorders. Dr. Thornton also provides an overview of  language that has been recommended by the Office of National Drug Control Policy. Brigg Reilley, HIV/HCV National Programs Epidemiologist at the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board, shares information about the epidemiology of HCV in the Great Plains region.

Karla Thornton, MD, MPH, is a Professor of Infectious Diseases at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.

Brigg Reilley, MPH, has worked on national HIV/HCV Programs with both NPAIHB and IHS for ten years. He also worked for Doctors Without Borders for several years in international emergency settings, and with the Louisiana Office of Public Health in outbreak investigations. He obtained an MPH from Tulane in 1996.
