In this presentation, Dr Jorge Mera, MD, FACP, Indian Country ECHO Medical Director and Director of Infectious Diseases for Cherokee Nation Health Services (CNHS), highlights best practices for responding to the rise of syphilis rates in Indigenous communities, and provides an opportunity to engage in a didactic presentation, become part of a learning community, and join an upcoming Infectious Disease ECHO program.

In this series of presentations, Dr. Jonathan Iralu, Chief Clinical Consultant for Infectious Diseases at IHS, provides a clinical update on emerging COVID-19 topics. Then, Dr. Melanie Taylor, Medical Epidemiologist for the CDC and Captain with the United States Public Health Service, reviews syphilis in detail and discusses ways to respond to outbreaks.

Syphilis in the ED: Why it Matters and What to Know | March 3, 2022

We welcome you to join Indian Country ECHO for a special session focused on responding to the rise of syphilis rates in Indigenous communities. This session will cover syphilis’ reemergence and changing epidemiology, why Emergency Departments (EDs) are crucial players in syphilis prevention efforts, characteristics and clinical staging of syphilis, and key features of ED diagnosis, management, and disposition for patients with syphilis. The one-hour session includes an opportunity to engage in a didactic presentation led by Dr. Erin Tromble, MD & Dr. Eitan Bornstein, MD, participate in a discussion and become part of a learning community to share best practices and reduce the toll of syphilis in Indian Country. CME, CNE and CPE will be available.

CDC STI Treatment Guidelines: Gonorrhea, Chlamydia | March 17, 2022

In this series of presentations, Dr. Jorge Mera, ECHO Medical Director, provides a clinical update on emerging COVID-19 topics. Then, Dr. Hilary Reno, Medical Consultant for the CDC, discusses updated STI screening recommendations for special populations, reviews new recommended treatments for gonorrhea and chlamydia and updated guidelines regarding pelvic inflammatory disease and trichomonas management, and discusses follow-up care and some aspects of partner services.

Responding to the Rising Rates of Congenital Syphilis in Indigenous Communities | April 12, 2022

We welcome you to join Indian Country ECHO in partnership with the IHS National STD Program for Grand Rounds focused on congenital syphilis. In this series of presentations, moderated by Dr Jean Howe, IHS Chief Clinical Consultant for Ob/Gyn, Dr Aliza Machefsky and Dr Melanie Taylor will highlight best practices for responding to the rise of congenital syphilis rates in Indigenous communities. Then, Dr Sophina Calderon will share the story of how their facility recognizes, responds to and prevents congenital syphilis. This one-hour Grand Rounds session includes an opportunity to engage in a didactic presentation, become part of a learning community, and join an Infectious Disease ECHO program.
