Syphilis 101: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Elimination | October 19, 2023

In this presentation, Dr. Jonathan Iralu, Chief Clinical Consultant for Infectious Diseases at Indian Health Service (IHS), shares the latest updates on syphilis and Doxy PEP. Dr. Iralu examines the epidemiologic trends of syphilis in Indian Country, shares ways to identify and stage syphilis cases (primary, secondary, early latent, late latent), how to provide the proper treatment for syphilis in accordance with current CDC guidelines and reviews STI elimination best practices in the IHS.

 

In case you haven’t already received the information below in regards to the bicillin shortage. If you are aware of clinics that do not have any supply, they can contact Pfizer and/or the CDC for assistance:

Tribal providers can call the Pfizer 1-800 number (copied below) and request bicillin b/c they have a pregnant person in need of treatment. They can also send an email to stdshortages@cdc.gov with a specific request and John Papp will connect them with Pfizer. 

Contact the Pfizer Supply Continuity Team between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. (CT) at 1-844-646-4398 (select option 1 [Customer], then option 3) and inform them of your urgent need If the distributor has no supply and there is a risk that priority patients (pregnant people and babies with CS) may not be treated. Let CDC know if they are able or unable to help.

Dr. Jonathan Iralu, MD, MACP, FISDA, is the Indian Health Service Chief Clinical Consultant for Infectious Diseases. He has a special interest in HIV, tuberculosis, and sexually transmitted disease care in rural communities. His research has focused on undifferentiated febrile illness in the American Southwest and on rural HIV care delivery. He has worked at Gallup Indian Medical Center since 1994 and is an instructor at Harvard Medical School and Senior Physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Division of Global Health Equity in Boston, Massachusetts.
