In this presentation, Erin Brownley, MPH, RDN, LD, CDCES with Shoshone-Bannock Tribes
Diabetes Project, discusses weight stigma and the discriminatory acts and ideologies targeted towards individuals because of their weight and size. Erin highlights the importance that weight stigma does not result in weight loss, how weight stigma and internalized weight stigma can result in toxic stress and toxic shame, the negative impacts of weight stigma in the healthcare setting, how weight regulation is more complex than eating less & exercising more, as well as the need to assess our own and our facility’s weight stigma and discrimination.
