Working Together to Prevent Commercial Tobacco Use | April 14, 2022

Although cigarette smoking is decreasing among the general population, smoking prevalence still remains the highest among American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) adults at 27.1 percent compared to 12.5 percent among all adults in the U.S. In this presentation, Alberta Becenti provides an overview of commercial tobacco use among AI/AN, associated risk with diabetes and heart disease, evidence based approaches and resources that may enhance patient success toward tobacco free living. Then Alberta discusses the harms of exposure to second and third-hand smoke, and the importance of encouraging patients and communities to abstain from tobacco use to support healthy living.

Alberta Becenti

Alberta Becenti is the Public Health Advisor for the Health Promotion/Disease Prevention program for the IHS Headquarters in Rockville, Maryland. She works with 11 IHS Area HP/DP Coordinators to plan and implement activities focusing on obesity, tobacco, and cancer prevention in the community, clinic, school, and worksite.  She has work in the field of health promotion and wellness for more than 20 years.
